General Ophthalmology(Cataracts), Vitreoretinal Surgeon, Oculoplastics and Neuro-Ophthalmology

I am a leader within Newcastle & the Hunter Valley in the field of Ophthalmology. I give lectures on numerous topics within both the fields of Vitreo-retinal Surgery, Cataract Surgery, Diabetic Eye Disease, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Eyelid & Cosmetic Surgery. I also run frequent seminars with the public & other health professionals in these fields.

I work both in private practice and as a VMO in the Hunter New England Area Health Service, in the fields of Vitreo-retinal Surgery, Cataract Surgery (including Refractive Lens Surgery) & in Oculoplastic, Lacrimal & Orbital Surgery & in the field of Diabetic Eye Disease & Age Related Macular Degeneration.

I am an expert Cataract Surgeon performing more than 100 surgeries of this kind per year & have extensive experience in Implantation of Multifocal Intraocular Lenses, both in the setting of Cataract, as well as in the treatment for Presbyopia. My aim is for full spectacle independence for my patients, or in other words, not having to wear glasses at all.

As a fully trained Subspecialist Oculoplastic Surgeon I have a particular passion & interest in Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery and in my role as a Cosmetic Surgeon with Preface, I perform hundreds of Blepharoplasty type procedures & brow lifts every year. I have been trained in Fat Transfer Techniques, Traditional Face Lifting & Thread Lifting. Patients are directed to me from all over Northern Central NSW for these sorts of treatments. As well as the Cosmetic focus, I have had extensive training in Reconstructive Eyelid Surgery, including periocular skin cancer, lacrimal surgery (including surgery for watery eyes due to tear duct obstruction) & Orbital Surgery.

I am also passionate about providing Ophthalmic Care in developing and underprivileged communities and bi-annually perform eye surgeries and train local Ophthalmologists in Myanmar (previously Burma), Katherine and surrounding areas in the NT.

Dr Gittos is an Australian trained Ophthalmic Surgeon, and a subspecialist in both Oculoplastic Surgery and Ocular Oncology.

Dr Gittos completed his training in general medicine at the University of Auckland School of Medicine and then trained as a specialist Ophthalmic Surgeon with the Royal Australia and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

Following this he worked for seven years at the world renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital London, completing subspecialty fellowships in Oculoplastic Surgery (two years) and subsequently Ocular Oncology (three years), training directly under some the most internationally acclaimed specialists in their field. He also worked as a Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon for a period of one year at Moorfields independently managing tertiary referrals from throughout the United Kingdom. Further experience was gained working in other departments including Medical Retina, Glaucoma and Cataract Surgery, between subspecialty fellowships.

Dr Gittos subsequently worked for a period of fourteen years as a full time Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the British public sector. In addition to cosmetic and reconstructive oculoplastic surgery, he amassed considerable further experience and expertise in cataract surgery, the medical and surgical management of glaucoma, surgery for pterygium and the management of ocular surface tumours.

Dr Gittos has now returned to Australia and joined The Newcastle Eye Centre in Bolton St, also consulting at Raymond Terrace, Nelson Bay, Maitland and Singleton. He also holds a public appointment at the John Hunter Hospital.
